How We Work

Mother and son on graduation day

We target the most critical problems and drive collaborations that produce meaningful results.

Why United Way?

We believe that Education, Income and Health are the building blocks to a good life. However, they are presently out of reach for far too many New Yorkers:

  • 5 in 10 public school students - still don't earn a high school diploma.
  • More than 1 in 5 New Yorkers live below the poverty line - just $22,200 for a family of four.
  • Thousands of families and children lack access to basic preventive and primary health care.

Communities turn to United Way for efficient, large-scale solutions to problems like these. There are no quick fixes - but every day, United Way sets in motion a chain reaction of strategies that produce far-reaching results.

How We Work

  • We convene and work side-by-side with individuals, nonprofits, government, businesses, faith-based and other community partners;
  • We create and fund initiatives that improve the quality of life for individuals and families - and multiply them again and again;
  • We provide technical assistance, leadership development and a wide range of support to strengthen the capacity of our nonprofit partners;
  • We work with policy makers and advocate on important issues around health, education, and income.
  • We are accountable for our efforts. We continually evaluate programs and public policies for effectiveness.

Learn more about United Way's work in our three Action Areas - Education, Income and Health - and how our expertise in Strengthening New York City Nonprofits builds the capacity of health and human service organizations so that, collectively, we create more efficient, far-reaching solutions that lead to lasting change.
