United Way of New York City offers a wide variety of opportunities to get involved in advancing the common good.

Other Ways to Get Involved
NYC Service
Everybody’s got something to offer. Use your time, passion, skills and willingness to help to address New York City’s most pressing needs. The Mayor's NYC Service initiative's website - nyc.gov/service – developed in partnership with United Way of New York City – features hundreds of one-time and on-going volunteer opportunities with nonprofits in New York City’s five boroughs. Search by zip code, your interests, skills you are able to offer, and more.
BoardServeNYC: Board Training & Placement
Looking to expand your professional and personal life by serving on a nonprofit board? BoardServeNYC helps business professionals acquire the skills and knowledge they need to serve as effective board members. Participants are selected through an application process. Once accepted, participants are required to attend a training session covering such topics as roles and responsibilities as well as legal and fiduciary oversight. Once the training session is completed, participants are introduced to local nonprofits actively recruiting board members. For more information, visit BoardServeNYC.
MoneyUP
Interested in helping low-income New Yorkers increase savings and build assets?
Learn financial coaching and tax preparation skills as a volunteer for MoneyUP, a joint initiative of United Way and the Financial Clinic.
Volunteer coaches prepare tax returns for filers and then work with clients to help secure work supports, reduce debt, improve their credit, and foster savings habits.
MoneyUp volunteers must also be able to commit to at least one four-hour shift per week throughout the tax season and perhaps beyond.
Training is provided in December and January. For more information, email Natalia Lopez at nlopez@uwnyc.org.
LIVE UNITED Brooklyn Bridge Walk & Volunteer Festival
Organize a team of co-workers, families and friends – or register on your own — for our LIVE UNITED Brooklyn Bridge Walk on Saturday, September 26, 2009.
Thousands of New Yorkers participate in this event to advocate for the need to improve educational opportunities, income stability, and health for all New Yorkers.
After the walk, join us for the LIVE UNITED Volunteer Festival (co-presented by the Mayor's Volunteer Center)
where you can explore volunteer and advocacy opportunities with United Way and dozens of our partner agencies.
Visit liveunitednyc.org after April 1, 2009 for more details.
Customized Days of Action
Select corporate partners are invited to participate in team-based projects that can accommodate up to 25 volunteers and are tailored to the needs of each company.
Each volunteer project takes place at a United Way partner agency and supports the work of one of our three Action Areas (Education, Income and Health).
Recent projects completed by corporate teams include giving a fresh coat of paint to a day care center, planting a garden, doing arts and crafts projects and/or reading to children, organizing and packing food at a food pantry, and preparing and serving meals at a soup kitchen.
To find out if your company is eligible for this benefit, please contact your United Way Staff Partner.
In-House Volunteer Projects
Is sending staff outside the office not realistic? Would you like to involve more employees?
United Way can help you organize an in-house volunteer project that supports the work of our partner agencies.
Examples include packing backpacks for underprivileged youth, making first aid kits, packing emergency food bags for a food pantry, and making greeting cards and other care packets. For more information, contact your United Way Staff Partner.
Action Drives
Action Drives, organized by United Way four times a year, provide employees with an opportunity to give back to their community without leaving the office.
These annual Back-to-School, Canned Food, Holiday Toy, and Household Goods drives collect and distribute items greatly needed by United Way partner agencies.
United Way provides you with all the materials you need – posters, flyers, and suggested emails.
Your company is responsible for delivering the items to the partner agency identified by United Way.
For more information, contact your United Way Staff Partner or nlopez@uwnyc.org.
