UNITED WAY OF NYC ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY GRANT AWARDS TO STRENGTHEN CAPACITY OF NONPROFITS THROUGHOUT THE FIVE BOROUGHS ----------------------------------------------- Grants Awarded to 18 Local Organizations

The selected organizations are receiving $5,000 to $20,000 to further their missions of strengthening the communities in which they work. Grants focused on small and mid-size nonprofits with budgets of less than $5 million, and will help grantees weather the current economic crisis by addressing their needs for fiscal management, fundraising and strategic planning support. “As a result of the recession, many organizations have seen government contracts significantly reduced, and, at the same time, are experiencing a decrease in corporate and individual gifts,” said Gordon Campbell, President and CEO of United Way of NYC. “Through our Community Grants, we aim to support the ability of organizations to continue providing vital services that improve the lives of those most in need.” This year’s grantees range from a housing program for homeless women and families to an urban farm with afterschool programs for low-income youth. Despite their diverse missions, each organization shares a commitment to serving high-need communities. The recipients of United Way of New York City’s Community Grants are:
