New York, NY – United Way of New York City today announced the recipients of its 2010 Community Grants, totaling over $250,000. The selected organizations are receiving $5,000 to $20,000 to further their missions of strengthening the communities in which they work. Out of the 209 applications received, 18 grantees from all five boroughs were selected.

The grants are part of United Way of New York City’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the organizational capacity of community-based nonprofits serving the city’s most vulnerable populations.  Grants focused on small and mid-size nonprofits with budgets of less than $5 million, and will help grantees weather the current economic crisis by addressing their needs for fiscal management, fundraising and strategic planning support.

“As a result of the recession, many organizations have seen government contracts significantly reduced, and, at the same time, are experiencing a decrease in corporate and individual gifts,” said Gordon Campbell, President and CEO of United Way of NYC. “Through our Community Grants, we aim to support the ability of organizations to continue providing vital services that improve the lives of those most in need.”

This year’s grantees range from a housing program for homeless women and families to an urban farm with afterschool programs for low-income youth. Despite their diverse missions, each organization shares a commitment to serving high-need communities.

The recipients of United Way of New York City’s Community Grants are:
Brooklyn: Added Value & Herban Solutions, Inc.; Dwa Fanm, Inc.; MASBIA; Mixteca Organization, Inc.; Sunset Bay Community Services
Bronx: CityWide Harm Reduction Program, Inc; THE POINT Community Development Corporation; Seventh Avenue Center for Family Services Head Start
Manhattan: Committee for Hispanic Children and Families; East Harlem Tutorial Program; Housing + Solutions, Inc.; National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City Metro; One Stop Senior Services; West End Intergenerational Residence
Queens: The MinKwon Center for Community Action; Chhaya Community Development Corporation; Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House
Staten Island: African Refuge, Inc.
