Emergency Food and Shelter Program

3 million New Yorkers regularly have trouble affording food.

Many New York families must make difficult choices about how to stretch their income each month—just as one bill gets paid, another comes along.  The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP), administered by United Way, provides income support to low- income New Yorkers on an emergency basis to prevent hunger, preserve housing, provide shelter, and support their basic energy needs. This past year, EFSP:

  • Supported 234 soup kitchens, food pantries, and shelters
  • Served one million meals
  • Distributed 1.5 million bags of food
  • Provided 901 nights of shelter
  • Distributed $1.3 million in rent, mortgage and utility assistance

EFSP is generously supported by Bank of America.
