United Way of New York City consistently ranks in the top percentile of efficiency among charities of our size. In Fiscal Year 2011, our administrative and fundraising costs accounted for only 16% of every dollar spent.
The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability were developed to assist donors in making informed giving decisions and to foster public confidence in charitable organizations. Seeking to encourage fair and honest solicitation practices, to promote ethical conduct by charitable organizations, and to advance support of philanthropy, these standards stipulate that a charity should spend at least 65% of its total expenses on program services and should spend no more than 35% of related contributions on fundraising.
We're also committed to leveraging your gift—regardless of size—so that it will yield considerably greater impact. United Way of New York City works with a wide range of diverse partners in every community, including large and small community-based organizations, local and state government, corporations, small businesses, faith-based organizations, foundations, and individuals. Because of these long-standing relationships, we are able to leverage your contribution with foundation grants, government contracts, and other funding.
