USDA Hunger-Free Communities Grant

One out of every six elderly New Yorkers receives food from soup kitchens and food pantries.

In February 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded United Way of New York City $2 million to promote hunger-free communities.  With the grant, UWNYC is leading a partnership of several nonprofit anti-hunger, nutrition, and aging organizations to implement a citywide organizing and outreach plan designed to increase participation in government and private nutrition assistance and anti-poverty programs.  Efforts target especially vulnerable populations including children, the working poor and senior citizens.
