Power of Women to Make a Difference Award Luncheon 2017

“We are all here to ensure that families get what they deserve…fierce love.”
—Sheena Wright, CEO, United Way of New York City

On March 8, 2017, as International Women’s Day and “Day Without a Woman” critically activated communities across the world, our Women United (WU) brought the invaluable power of women together for their 11th Annual Power of Women to Make a Difference Award Luncheon.

Nearly 500 guests joined our WU to fight for families, especially children, living in our City’s high-poverty communities. Together, we gathered to mobilize the “fierce love” that will empower our most-vulnerable neighbors out of poverty, toward prosperity.

To show our “fierce love,” the first step is to ensure all children get access to a quality education and learn how to read. That’s why the WU’s luncheon focused on United Way of New York City’s ReadNYC program and the power of words—the power of literacy—to catapult children toward success. That’s why the Power of Women came together to spread the words!

If you joined us, THANK YOU.

Thank you for standing for the power of community, the promise of impact, and the dreams of all children. We hope you enjoy our highlights!

About Women United

Women United (WU) is a leadership society of United Way of New York City female donors. Women who make a gift of at least $1,000 or more, are invited to join. Founded in 2002, UWNYC’s WU is a multi-industry network of accomplished, philanthropically-minded women who bring together their talents and power to make a difference in the lives of low-income New Yorkers. WU is connected to a global movement representing 70,000+ women in 165 communities across six countries, and the network’s engagement centers around three pillars of activities: fundraising, personal/professional development, and volunteerism.

A key element of WU’s program is support for ReadNYC, the collective impact initiative designed by the UWNYC to enable children to read at grade level by third grade—a critical milestone in a child’s future success. Of note, the WU community has raised over $5 million for this and other youth empowerment initiatives since its inception.
