NEW YORK, NY – Thousands of children and their families in the South Bronx and Brooklyn are smiling ear-to-ear this holiday season because United Way of New York City (UWNYC) teamed up with exclusive courier partner United Parcel Service (UPS), and several corporate partners for UWNYC’s annual Holiday Gift Drive. This year’s drive served 10 schools committed to getting their students reading on grade-level by third grade.
In addition to collecting gifts, UPS served as exclusive courier partner offering complimentary pickup and delivery of gifts for these deserving children. On Thursday, December 17 and Friday, December 18, UPS made its way through the Bronx and Brooklyn bringing cheer to every school they visited as they delivered the gifts, wrapped by UWNYC’s Young Leaders Council and volunteers from UPS.
“I am grateful to all our corporate partners for participating in the Holiday Gift Drive, especially to UPS for not only contributing, but also donating their time and talent to delivering these gifts,” said Sheena Wright, President and CEO of United Way of New York City. “This is the perfect time of year to celebrate the accomplishments of all the incredible children, families, and educators at these schools.”
“We are so honored that UPSers were able to contribute their logistical skills to UWNYC's annual Holiday Gift Drive this year,” said Laura James, Community Relations Manager, UPS—East Region. “UPS values its long-standing partnership with United Way, and our employees were thrilled to donate toys as well as their time to these local families.”
The schools benefiting from the drive are UWNYC’s ReadNYC schools. ReadNYC is UWNYC’s initiative to improve grade-level reading by third grade—a critical milestone in a child’s future success. Studies show that children who do not read at grade-level by third grade are 70% less likely to graduate from high school and continue on to college and self-sufficiency. ReadNYC aims to boost literacy and improve education outcomes in New York City’s low-income communities.
“What a great way to celebrate all the work P.S. 49 and United Way of New York City have done this year,” said Frank Hernandez, Principal of P.S. 49—a beneficiary of the Holiday Gift Drive. “ReadNYC has been an incredible initiative to bring into our school. Teaching, leading, learning have all improved as a result of our partnership! Our school community and parents are appreciative and have all greatly benefited from the positive effects of the program.”
Gifts included coloring books, educational toys, action figures, dolls, and games, as well as gift cards for parents. Additional companies that participated in UWNYC’s Holiday Gift Drive include: Brown Brothers Harriman and Hearst Corporation.
