NEW YORK, NY – United Way of New York City was honored yesterday at the Education Innovation Awards presented by EVERFI, Inc. at the Nasdaq Marketsite in New York City. The award recognizes United Way of New York City’s exceptional efforts to strengthen communities and empower students through unique digital learning opportunities. Twenty institutions were honored with this distinction at a ceremony hosted on June 12.

Honorees were selected based on a set of criteria that included the scale and impact of their digital education initiatives as well as unique student engagement and employee volunteering activities that supplement their programs.

“United Way of New York City is so honored to be receiving the Education Innovation Award,” said Lesleigh Irish-Underwood, Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer at United Way of New York City. “Being able to partner on this incredible work, alongside the New York Giants, and bring the much needed technology and resources into schools in some of our City’s most-vulnerable neighborhoods is a driving force in United Way’s fight for education, health, and financial stability. Together, we are helping these students build strong character, healthy relationships, and setting them on the path for success.”

United Way of New York City is committed to providing students with the skills and knowledge they need through our partnership with EVERFI and the NFL to bring Character Playbook to local students at no cost to schools or taxpayers. Character Playbook has reached nearly 2,500 students since the program started in the 2016 school year. This program is an evidence-based, innovative digital experience focused on positive character development and building healthy relationships during critical middle school years.

“When we founded EVERFI back in 2008, we drove an RV across the country asking educators how we could use digital learning to prepare students for the real-world challenges that they face in high school and beyond,” said EVERFI Co-Founder and President Jon Chapman. “Today, we thank the organizations who have joined for that ride, and we honor their deep commitment to investing in communities and preparing students with the 21st Century skills they need to lead healthy, productive lives.”

Character Playbook is currently run in 42 schools across New York City. This experience allows students to participate in six modules throughout the school year to learn important skills that cultivate character by covering key concepts in character development, social-emotional learning, and healthy relationship building.
