United Way of New York City at Somos

In March, our President & CEO, Grace Bonilla, along with a delegation of UWNYC staff, attended the 2024 Somos Inc. New York Conference hosted by the New York State Puerto Rican and Hispanic Taskforce. A pillar in the community, Somos Inc. is an organization committed to uniting and empowering the Latino community through dialogue, debates, civic service, and cultural preservation.

Grace spoke in a workshop with other nonprofit leaders. Her message was centered around philanthropy’s role in supporting smaller nonprofits, building nonprofits’ capacity in a post-pandemic world, and building private and public partnerships.

Our Director of Education Partnerships, Lucero Batista, added meaningfully to a panel conversation about creating an inclusive and culturally responsive curriculum in NY State schools. The discussion touched on the importance of representing the voices, perspectives, and histories of all marginalized communities. Lucero spoke alongside Assembly Members Manny De Los Santos, Grace Lee, and Senator Robert Jackson.

Our legislative sponsors were instrumental in our participation. Thank you, Assembly Members Catalina Cruz, Al Taylor, and Steven Raga.
